Violating the sanctity

May 7, 2022

It came as a bolt from the blue when pilgrims were shown chanting decrying slogans at the holiest of Islamic premises. The scenes soon became viral furthering polarising the already badly polarised Pakistani polity. Ugly scenes were witnessed at the holy mosque when PM Shehbaz and his delegation arrived there and the Pakistani pilgrims at the mosque started chanting slogans of “chor” as soon as they saw the prime minister. Moreover, the pilgrims heckled and chanted abusive slogans against federal ministers Marriyum Aurangzeb and Shahzain Bugti, as the pair were escorted by Saudi guards with another video showing a pilgrim pulling Bugti’s hair from behind. The incidents were widely condemned by all segments of population but no regret emerged out of the PTI high circles. On the contrary, many PTI associated circles justified the acts on the pretext that anybody causing harm to Pakistan was not required to be spared at any place. However, this is not the first time that Pakistani temper is seen being lost in public and this assuredly would not be the last time but the point to worry is that where it all will end. TW
