Sigh of relief

Pakistanis Sigh of relief and waited anxiously and with bated breath for an inordinately long time for the appointment to the most coveted position in the land. The anxiety started building up virtually after the change of regime in April this year when the party out of power started targeting the incumbent army chief and rumours started swirling around that he may seek an extension to sort matters out. Six months of high drama were so intense that even the unprecedented floods in the country failed to divert attention from it. Finally, however, it ended with breaking away from the past practice as strict adherence was shown to the principle of seniority that, incidentally, had been the consistent demand of the men in uniform that was quite regularly flouted by short-sighted political leaders. By conceding the principle of seniority the politicians have belatedly accepted that the person heading the armed services is the man of his own institution and that no untoward expectation should be pinned on him. Moreover, while selecting the COAS, his achievement as winner of the prestigious Sword of Honour has been duly taken into account. The CJSC also hold exceptional professional merit as he has served on all positions considered significant for career progression. TW
