It was quite acceptable that the incumbent Reducing Shehbaz-speed exhorted people to work hard but declaring a six-day week was taking it too far. His misplaced enthusiasm yet again brought to fore the singular lack of historical sense exhibited by successive generations of Pakistani political leadership. They certainly do not know, and surely were not told that 40-hours week regime widely practiced currently was the result of long periods of debating inhuman working hours and exploitative conditions that became the offshoot of industrial revolution. The long-drawn conflict was finally settled in the last century with five-day working week becoming standard parameter of obtaining productive human output. On the contrary, Pakistani leadership has consistently treated the matter whimsically and the result is that working week keeps on fluctuating causing serious disruption in national working pattern. It has also given rise to arbitrary tendencies as is clearly borne out that the judicial segment of the state still insists on working 6 days a week. It is quite obvious that treating such crucial issues on personal whims creates schisms within the national fabric seriously damaging its productivity. In wake of considering shortening the working week due to paucity of energy simply highlights the folly committed by the current leadership. TW
