Miftah Ismail had an amazing time at the helm of his political career. He was simultaneously adored and reviled with his supporters praising his matter-of-fact approach to the fast dwindling national economy and his detractors chiding him for buckling under the IMF’s pressure with Maryam Nawaz criticising him in public and even disowned his petroleum price hike. It was generally observed that he was sometimes out of depth and uttered things that conveyed a totally wrong impression. It was quite clear that he did not have the blessings of his party’s supreme leadership and that he was handpicked by the incumbent prime minister. Right from the outset, he locked horns with his nemesis, Ishaq Dar, who happened to be the ultimate candidate for managing the country’s financial affairs and finally Miftah Ismail was pushed over to the side as by his own admission he was an easy target. Badly jumbled and hurt Miftah Ismail vehemently started bad-mouthing Ishaq Dar’s economic policies and alleged that he was removed at Dar’s behest. Soon after he joined other political mavericks such as Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar and Aslam Raisani and launched the Reimagining Pakistan campaign holding several seminars on the current challenges faced by the country.
