Iftaar in Los Angeles – The sacred month of Ramadan comes as a harbinger of blessings for Muslims the world over. After fasting from dawn to dusk to obtain forgiveness and blessings of the Almighty, Muslims break their fast in quite a ceremonial manner. This event is known as iftaar and it is fervently observed by the Islamic world for whole of the holy month. Muslims living abroad also adhere to this practice and often invite their friends and their families to share iftaar with them.
This year in Los Angeles a new tradition was set when the Pakistan American Chamber of Commerce in collaboration with Islamic Shura Council of Southern California held a large Iftaar occasion that was attended by inter faith leaders from the Christian, Jewish, Sikh, Hindu and Buddhist faiths. Moreover, all consular representatives of the Islamic countries were also present at the occasion. This event broke new ground by improving upon the prevailing practice of LA county mayors organising iftaar with Muslims though on a modest scale.
Los Angeles, the second most populated city in the world is located in the world’s fourth-largest economy in the State of California. It is home to a diverse population where people from all faiths coexist peacefully as one nation, one country, and one planet. Hundreds of people attended this event at the Convention Center as the purpose of this event was to promote peace and harmony among all religions and also to educate people about the Ramadan and its message. This event was considered a wonderful opportunity to show harmony and unity among different Muslim organisations and religious groups as well as to remind everyone that we all share the same human values, respect and dignity as the other citizens of this wonderful city, regardless of race, colour, religion or place of origin.
The singular goal of the event was to make it an all inclusive event and get everyone wholeheartedly involved in the occasion sharing the strong spirit of Ramadan. It is earnestly expected that this event would become a yearly affair and will be emulated throughout the United States. The Weekender
