Furore over sandwich-maker ada

An advert inviting Emiratis to apply for a Furore over sandwich-maker ada job has sparked a storm in the UAE citizenry decrying purportedly humiliating attempts to provide employment. The public reaction was so intense that it compelled the authorities to open an immediate investigation to probe the contentious job advert and it went to the extent of even interrogating the CEO of the business. It was known that a retail giant Kamal Osman Jamjoom Group advertised the position at the Subway fast food chain, tailored specifically for Emirati nationals to support the state’s efforts to localise jobs. The vacancy announcement — later retracted — came ahead of a looming January deadline for private UAE-based companies with more than 50 employees to ensure that two per cent of their staff are UAE nationals on pain of fines. The advert provoked intense opposition with twitter messages terming it mockery and also pointing out that the lack of administrative, financial and technical jobs has led to sandwich maker lamenting that what an age it is. Though there are few who observed that there is no shame in such jobs with one Emirati noting on Twitter that billionaire Jeff Bezos started out as a McDonald’s employee but a large majority of Emirati citizens have castigated it roundly.
