The Devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria were, like most earthquakes, both utterly shocking and entirely predictable. The region lies on two major faults and Turkiye’s own history is riddled with devastating earthquake but this one is tremendously destructive. Even with all this history, however, this week’s earthquakes were likely the largest natural disaster the country has ever faced, hitting ten major cities in southern Turkiye, as well as parts of northern Syria which had already been extensively damaged by war and is mostly controlled by rebels. Last week’s quake was the deadliest in Turkiye since one of similar magnitude in 1999 that killed more than 17,000. The death toll of the current disaster is still reported and it is unfortunately increasing. The whole world was stunned by the scale of disaster and a strong sympathy wave surged with help and assistance pouring accordingly. The main post-earthquake worry was that poor internet connections and damaged roads between some of the worst-hit Turkish cities, homes to millions of people, hindered efforts to assess the impact and plan help. It is earnestly hoped that further damage, both to life and property, will not take place and things will come back to normal soon. TW
