Senior PPP leader and former senator Rehman Malik passed away in Islamabad due to coronavirus-related complications. He was 70. He had tested positive for Covid-19 in January and the virus had affected lungs making him to complain of breathing problems. Initially he was shifted to the intensive care unit of a private hospital in Islamabad after his condition deteriorated, however, his condition continued to worsen and doctors subsequently put him on a ventilator on 1 February where he passed away. Rehman Malik began his career in the FIA switching on to politics and then beginning career as a politician holding many portfolios including that of the interior minister from 2008 to 2013. It was at his residence in London that Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto and Mian Nawaz Sharif signed the famous Charter of Democracy that paved the way for rather fractious cooperation between civilian political forces of the country. He remained close to the top leadership of PPP and was highly rated there. He was also a recipient of the Sitara-i-Shujaat for his services in the Federal Investigation Agency and the Nishan-i-Imtiaz in recognition of his public services. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
