Aftab Sultan resigned as the chairman of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) after serving just seven months. Interestingly, he was appointed by the coalition government and he was known to be trusted by the top leadership of the party as he remained head of the intelligence bureau for many years that included an extension granted by the former PMLN government. After the chairman NAB resigns in 2018 he went to his native Faisalabad to grow roses and flowers.
He was recalled, and rather hesitatingly agreed to take over the badly besmirched chairman NAB resigns. During his brief stay, it appeared that he has taken to the sting out of the vice accountability outfit but was soon caught up in the intricacies of dual governance structure. He was known for his tenacious uprightness and in 2002, as RPO Sargodha, he refused to assist the administration during the referendum called by General Musharraf duly paying for his defiance.
When he was made OSD. A dour police officer, he was known for his investigation skills preparing a 5,000-page report on directives of the Supreme Court about the famous Bank of Punjab case. Interestingly, the SC had appointed Sultan as the investigation officer after being dissatisfied with the investigations conducted by NAB. The Weekender
