The capability levels in Pakistan of people from every walk of life have fallen to a crisis point. This unfortunate fact was brought to fore yet again when a tense operation was launched to rescue individuals including many school children from a stranded cable in Battagram district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. The rope of the cable car broke mid-air suspending it hundreds of over a mountainous valley. Chairlifts are traditionally used by people to cross rivers and shorten the distance needed to travel between valleys in the mountains. Distances in mountainous areas like Battagram are far more traversing and makes students to spend hours descending a steep mountainside, crossing a river and then climbing another mountain. It is to tackle this rigorous situation that engineers have installed cable cars to assist students and locals in crossing the valley. Cable cars have been instrumental in effectively reducing lengthy journeys for villagers inhabiting locales spread far and wide. Many dangerous incidents have taken place involving cable cars exclusively due to technical deficiencies both in their construction and operation. This situation has become far too risky to continue and requires strictest possible vigilance if it is allowed to continue including duly authorised construction with licensees warned of serious consequences if any accident occurs in future.
