Biparjoy, disaster in Bengali, a powerful cyclonic storm that lingered for days over the Arabian Sea kept the people of the coastal areas and all concerned management agencies on their toes for more than a week evacuating over 80,000 people from coastal areas. At one time it was classified as a very severe cyclonic storm with maximum sustained surface winds were blowing at 100-120m per hour and gusts at 130km per hour around the system’s centre while sea conditions remained rough with a maximum wave height of 20-25 feet. Tropical cyclones in the Arabian Sea have become more frequent in recent decades because of warming sea-surface temperatures in the region which are enhanced by a warning climate. Biparjoy was likely to bring in its wake clouds of dust, thunderstorms and rain with a few heavy falls accompanied by gusty winds blowing at 30-50km per hour in Karachi, Hyderabad, Tando Muhammad Khan, Tando Allayar, Shaheed Benazirabad and Sanghar districts. Fortunately, Biparjoy weakened as it made landfall near the town of Naliya, in India, late on Thursday night with winds dropping to about 63 miles per hour. However, the storm was unleashing heavy rain near coastal areas of Pakistan. The Weekender
