In what has become a new normal the country was plunged in darkness, and as usual, no cogent reason was provided for this nationwide beginning of breakdowns. As is the wont, the power minister down played the power supply disaster terming it as grid failure followed a frequency variation in southern Pakistan adding that it was not a major crisis and power would be back soon. As is now expected both these statements were as far from truth as is possible as no one would ever know the actual reason of the power failure and the power was not restored fully for more than twenty-four hours. The frequency of power failures has now become part of life in the country as the last major power outage took place in October last year that took more than 12 hours to restore and it took out almost 8,000 MW from the system. The power failure added to the prevailing anxieties in the country and has caused the panic-stricken people to become even more fearful. The most worrying aspect is that this disaster may be a forerunner to larger problems that may finally choke the supply lines providing essential goods and services to the country. TW
