Indian government went to the extent of barring even sharing of any clips via social media. Indian government invoked emergency official powers available to it under the country’s information technology rules for blocking the documentary. The documentary has broken no new ground as it has just repeated the widely acknowledged involvement of Modi, the then-CM of Indian state of Gujarat, in a pogrom carried out against Muslims in 2002 during which more than 1,000 people were killed. Those riots began after 60 Hindu pilgrims died when a train carrying them was set on fire. During an investigation, Sanjiv Bhatt, a senior intelligence officer of Gujarat police had given a sworn statement to the Indian Supreme Court stating that in a meeting the night before the riots, Modi told officials that the Muslim community needed to be taught a lesson following an attack on a train carrying Hindu pilgrims. It is also very well-known that BBC documentary about Modi blocked by India was accordingly blacklisted in many Western countries. TW
